The Vibrant Pulse of Victoria: Public Art at "The Gorge" and Beyond

Victoria, BC, is a city where art and community intersect, reflecting its diverse culture. Public art transforms spaces into expressions of identity and history. A recent example is the new mural commissioned by PC Urban & Fiera Real Estate, at our newly completed rental apartment building, The Gorge Victoria, unveiled during the 2024 Easy West Mural Festival. Created by artist Luke Ramsey, this mural highlights the role of public art in connecting and engaging communities.

The mural at The Gorge Victoria showcases the collaborative nature of Victoria’s art scene. Led by Luke Ramsey, known for his work in public art and design, the mural aligns with the local environment. Ramsey, who has exhibited internationally, drew inspiration from The Gorge waterway, focusing on themes of nature, time, and connection. The swans depicted in the mural represent different stages of life, with a baby cygnet symbolizing growth and reflection. As the city continues to grow, public art like the mural at The Gorge will remain a key part of its cultural landscape, contributing to both residents' and visitors' experiences

The mural’s color palette uses earthy tones and vibrant shades to create a sense of balance. Ramsey also integrated the building’s features, turning structural elements into part of the artwork.

The 1700-square-foot mural was completed over six days, balancing structure with improvisation. Ramsey painted the mural freehand, without projection, using brushes and rollers. He adapted to weather challenges, such as summer rain, during the project.

"Public art transforms spaces into expressions of identity and history"

Luke Ramsey’s work on The Gorge mural is part of his broader career in public art. He was Victoria’s first Artist in Residence and often explores relationships between animal forms and abstract landscapes. Ramsey lives on Canada’s West Coast, where nature informs much of his work.

At PC Urban, we believe public art is an important aspect of a building’s cultural identity and provides a platform for local artists to engage the community. And this is why we commission a public art piece at each of our projects.
